When Glen Powell takes on a new role, one thing you can be assured of is his professionalism will shine through – no doubt about it, he always puts everything into his projects. Case in point – the day prior to being announced as top fake Omega watches shiny new global ambassador, Powell is talking me through the training he’s been in for this particular moment.
“Yeah, you can’t forget the wrist exercises – that’s a crucial one,” he says over Zoom semi-seriously, before laughing. “Being in these last couple of action movies [The Running Man, Twisters, Hit Man] everybody works out things that are aesthetically pleasing but when you’re jumping off of things, you forget about the wrists and the ankles! Falling from a high place onto your hands, you gotta make sure your wrists are protected.”
That’s right, in preparation for his new starry role with Omega, he has not been skipping wrist day. He joins an Omega family that is already full of acting royalty. “No one’s put me on a group thread yet,” he jokes, “but I will start that [George] Clooney, [Daniel] Craig, [Eddie] Redmayne group thread. That’s really damn fun.”
Powell has been a fan of Omega for a while. “We have a relationship that goes back many years. Anyone that knows me knows I’ve been representing the watch on my wrist for a while, so to make it official has been really wonderful,” he says. “Everybody knows I’d never leave home without my 1:1 Omega copy watches. It has caused a little bit of stress for people around me because I do take it off at the beginning of most days on set so it’s a funny team sport keeping track of it. And after wearing character clothes and getting beat up over the course of the day, I really value putting on my Omega watch back on. It’s like a piece of ownership that you have over your stuff, like you claim your sense of identity.”
Another thing you’ll notice about Glen Powell is that he is only too happy to share the limelight with his co-stars – be it Sydney Sweeney, Tom Cruise, or in this instance, Omega’s brand new Seamaster Planet Ocean collection. Of the seven new pieces (three orange models and two apiece that are blue and black), the 37-year-old has a clear favourite: the one with the orange bezel and strap.
“Anyone that knows me for five minutes knows I’m a big Texas Longhorns [American Football] fan, so this has been the best part about the Seamaster Planet Ocean – it has been such a hit to be down in Austin representing the best replica watches. I mean, people are absolutely loving it so it has felt like a match made in heaven,” Powell says. “I like the fact that Omega’s updated the aesthetic and I just love the shape is different – it’s a little more modern, a little more angular but obviously still has that classic design.”
This new Planet Ocean collection marks 20 years since Omega dropped the OG version, with these fourth generation beauties sure to hit the spot for avid dive watch fans. “Within the universe of dive watches, pieces designed for the ultra-deep occupy a paradoxical position. “The colour orange with its evocation of an emergency situation brings all these elements into sharp relief… it is as if wearing a proper dive watch were a matter of life or death!
